The clustered village of Sufers, the lowest settlement in the Rheinwald running west-east, lies to the north of the Hinterrhein, which is dammed to form Lake Sufnersee, at the mouth of the Steilerbach stream.
Splügen
Splügen is a typical Pass village with a well-preserved townscape, proud palazzi, sun-tanned Walser houses and belongs to the political municipality of Rheinwald.
Medels
Medels lies between Splügen and Nufenen and belongs to the political municipality of Rheinwald. It was previously the smallest political municipality in the valley, both in terms of area and population.
Nufenen
Nufenen, the second highest village in the west-east trough valley of the Rheinwald, lies to the left of the Hinterrhein opposite the mouth of the Areua stream and belongs to the political municipality of Rheinwald.
Hinterrhein
Hinterrhein is the uppermost village in the Rheinwald, the starting point for the San Bernadino Pass and belongs to the political municipality of Rheinwald.
