viaSpluga - Cultural and long-distance hiking trail

The Romans already used the direct connection from the south to the north. Their traces are omnipresent. Two thousand years of transit history can be experienced again today on the viaSpluga from Thusis to Chiavenna.

On this classic cultural and long-distance hiking trail, you hike in four one-day stages and over 68 kilometers in the heart of the Alps through largely intact countryside and past cultural assets of national and international importance. These include impressive bridges such as the Traversiner Bridge, the Viamala Gorge and the Roffla Waterfall, the prehistoric rock carvings of Carschenna and the early medieval ceiling of St. Martin's Church in Zillis. Other sights include the protected village center of Splügen, the historic mule track over the Splügen Pass and the wild and romantic Cardinello Gorge.

The viaSpluga can be booked from June 13 to October 25, 2026.

The viaSpluga is one of the routes of ViaStoria - Cultural Routes Switzerland. These routes are based on scientific principles such as the Inventory of Historic Routes in Switzerland (IVS). The proper maintenance and touristic use of historic routes make an important contribution to the sustainable development of the cultural landscape.

The viaSpluga Audio Book (German)

For the 2023 viaSpluga season, an audio format for hikers was created for the first time in this form: the hiking audio drama "Ein Stein über den Splügen". Using a smartphone, hikers can listen to a story at a total of 24 locations that could only take place here and nowhere else.
