Viamala – A Region of Delights

The Viamala region is now part of the “Culinary Destinations” program. This distinction highlights regions where the landscape, local products, culinary craftsmanship, and hospitality are closely intertwined.

This connection has shaped the Viamala culinary region for centuries. Spices, tropical fruits, wine, and cheese once made their way across the Alps via historic trade routes. Today, regional agriculture, local producers, and a diverse culinary scene embody a culture of fine dining that is deeply rooted in the region.

More than 80 percent of the region's agriculture is practiced according to organic principles. In terms of cuisine, the Viamala region offers everything from traditional inns and historic hotels to Michelin-starred restaurants.

The Rheinwald Goat

Landscape conservationist and all-around pleasure

When the goats make their way through Hinterrhein and Nufenen to the pastures in the morning, it’s not a tourist spectacle, but everyday life. Goat farming remains an integral part of the “ Rheinwald ” to this day, combining agriculture, landscape conservation, and the region’s culinary traditions.

The goats help keep bushes from encroaching on the pastures, thereby preserving valuable farmland. At the same time, they provide high-quality milk and meat, which are processed locally. The milk is used to make various types of goat cheese; the meat finds its way onto the table in the form of dishes such as “Gitzi,” “Salsiz,” or air-dried specialties, among others.

Thanks to the collaboration between agriculture, the restaurant industry, and tourism, a significant portion of this value remains in the region. It is precisely this connection that makes the Rheinwald goat the flagship product of Viamala, a destination for culinary delights.
