Romeo and Juliet in Beirut
In the run-up to the 36th Thusis World Film Festival, a select cinematic gem will once again be screened in various regions of Graubünden this year.“A Sad and Beautiful World”takes viewers on a journey to Beirut and tells the moving story of Yasmina and Nino.
The two are born on the same day, in the same hospital, just one minute apart, while civil war rages outside. As children, they are close friends, but lose touch after Yasmina emigrates. It isn’t until twenty years later that they meet again—and fall in love.
But their visions of life and a future together differ. Personal experiences and the political unrest in Lebanon have left their mark on both of them. Director and screenwriter Cyril Aris tells a love story that spans three decades and several generations, one that also reflects Lebanon’s recent history.
