Gian Marchet Colani - *Der Freischütz* - An Opera About a Graubünden Hunter
Adults: CHF 65.00 (1st class), CHF 45.00 (2nd class); Children: CHF 20.00
Hunting is a major topic not only in the Engadin but throughout Graubünden. To mark the end of the hunting season, Opera Engiadina will produce a veritable Graubünden hunters’ opera in October 2026 under the patronage of the Graubünden Hunters’ Association. The opera is based on Carl Maria von Weber’s famous opera “Der Freischütz.” The plot (libretto by Claudio Danuser and Manfred Ferrari) is tailored to the “King of the Bernina,” the legendary Engadine hunter Gian Marchet Colani from Pontresina (1772–1835), who was said to have shot with enchanted bullets—a motif that corresponds exactly to the magic bullets in *Der Freischütz*. At the heart of the opera are the famous Wolf’s Gorge scene—which will be set here in the Ova da Bernina Gorge near Pontresina—and the popular hunters’ chorus, sung for the first time in the Romansh language by hunters from the Engadin and Graubünden.
