Splügen was awarded the prestigious Wakker Prize in 1995. Since 1972, the Swiss Heritage Society has awarded the Wakker Prize to municipalities that make a special effort in their local planning to ensure a respectful and thus sustainable approach to the respective architectural values. The Wakker Prize is generally regarded as the "Oscar" for planning culture.
"The Swiss Heritage Society recognizes the care with which the municipality of Splügen is developing a gentle and sustainable tourism while at the same time preserving and maintaining its townscape, which is worthy of protection. In this way, Splügen is an example worthy of imitation for the mountain communities of Switzerland."
