Theater with Rupf and Ranisch

Where better to tell the story of the Rhine than right where it has carved its way through the rock with full force? In the summer of 2026, the Viamala Gorge will serve as the backdrop for an extraordinary theatrical experience: R(h)ein ins Vergnügen.

Gian Rupf and Volker Ranisch take you on a journey from the source of the Rhine all the way out to the open sea—full of wordplay, sound, stories, and surprising encounters.

From the source to the open sea

As two seasoned travelers, Gian Rupf and Volker Ranisch follow the Rhine along its entire length. In five chapters, they bring the river’s 1,233 kilometers to life through storytelling and sound.

Along the way, they encounter jilted lovers, mythical creatures, romantic characters, and even “Old Father Rhine” himself. Stories and myths weave together into a play that is poetic, humorous, and full of surprises.

When the Viamala Gorge Becomes a Stage

The Viamala Gorge is much more than just a stunning backdrop. The towering rock faces, the Hinterrhein River, and the special atmosphere in the evening all become part of the experience.

The result is a theatrical experience that can hardly be compared to a performance in a traditional theater: immediate, atmospheric, and closely tied to the place where the story is told.
