Formed thousands of years ago by glacial ice and the waters of the Hinterrhein River, the Viamala Gorge is one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Graubünden.

Duration, access, and hiking opportunities
The descent and ascent via the stairs to the gorge center usually takes 30–45 minutes. If you have more time, you can also explore the Viamala Gorge on various publicly accessible hiking trails between Thusis, Zillis, and Andeer. The staff at the visitor center will be happy to provide information about hiking routes, parking, and how to get there.
Viamala guided tours
Every Thursday from mid-July to mid-August at 2 pm, the Viamala Gorge and its fascinating transit history are presented in a guided tour. Can also be booked for groups on request.
Viamala Notte
Erwin Dirnberger brings many figures from the past back to life in the open stage space of the visitor center and accompanies the audience down into the nocturnal gorge with original quotes and songs.

Theater with Rupf and Ranisch
In *Rhein ins Vergnügen*, Gian Rupf and Volker Ranisch take the audience on a poetic and humorous journey along the Rhine, from its source to the open sea. Across five chapters, the river comes to life through stories, characters, and plenty of sailor’s yarns. The Viamala Gorge provides a striking backdrop for a sensory and entertaining theatrical experience.

The Viamala Gorge will be open from March 26 to November 1, 2026, as follows:
March 26 - April 30:
daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.*
May to September:
daily 08.00 - 19.00*
October 1 - November 1:
daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.*
During the winter season (November to March), the Viamala Gorge remains closed for safety reasons.
* Access to the gorge up to 30 minutes before closing time.

Payment for admissions and store items in cash in Swiss francs or euros (change in euros) and with all common electronic payment methods.
Store
Snacks, ice cream, drinks, chocolate, souvenirs, specialist and entertainment literature and various local specialties - there is plenty to discover in the store in the Viamala Gorge. From the covered terrace you have a breathtaking view down into the gorge.
There is a public toilet facility directly opposite the visitor center. Access to the toilets is subject to a charge (CHF 1 / Euro 1). The voucher you receive for this will be accepted in payment at the visitor center/shop.

Limited free parking spaces are available directly at the visitor center in the Viamala Gorge.
(Overnight parking of campers and motorhomes in the parking lots in the Viamala Gorge is prohibited)
Dogs
Dogs can enter the Viamala Gorge free of charge and must be kept on a lead.
