Guided hike to the Splügen Pass "From mule track to art road"

Discover the beautiful landscape and the eventful history of this Alpine pass. Reto Attenhofer, a retired teacher from Nufenen, will guide you through 1200 years of history and from Splügen along the old and new paths to the hospice.

Until the end of the 19th century, the Splügen Pass was one of the most important north-south routes in the Alpine region. Even the Romans used it. From the Middle Ages onwards, it became an important route for trading goods. In both summer and winter, muleteers transported goods on pack horses or sledges. The valley population in the Rheinwald made a good living from the muleteers. The historic village of Splügen, which is protected today, was created.

The Commercialstrasse between Chur and Chiavenna, built between 1818 and 1823, is of great cultural and historical value. Structures such as the avalanche gallery, which are of national importance today, were built along the Splügen Pass.

Difficulty: Easy to moderately difficult, ascent without breaks: 2 h 30 min / 700 hm

• Insurance is the responsibility of the participants

• Not suitable for children under approx. 12 years of age
• In the event of heavy rain, the hike will not take place (participants will be informed in good time if the hike is canceled)
